This is the F-16 fighter jet of the longboard world. Stunning appearance and seriously fast. The Kilima has had an overhaul for 2006 and now comes in light-weight, strong Bamboo, and has been lowered by way of ‘Drop-through’ mounted trucks. The trucks are super stable at speed and 3DM Avalons have proved time and again that they are high performance wheels.
This board is not just about speed though. It fits the bill as a classic longboard. Simply rolling down the street on it is an experience and the long wheelbase hides the fact that it turns and carves extremely well. The lowered ride height means that pushing and foot braking are more stable and comfortable, making it a good choice for long commutes or day long skate sessions.
Why Bamboo?Bamboo is fast becoming an alternative to Maple as the wood of choice for making skateboards. It’s stronger and lighter and maple, and it grows stupidly fast so it’s much better for the environment.
Why drop through? A board built with trucks mounted through the deck as opposed to on the bottom of the deck sits about 2cm lower. This gives you a lower centre of gravity, and also means that the deck pivots around the centre of the truck pivot axis, which is much more stable. The trucks remain as turny as they would be mounted underneath the board, but you can ride way faster without getting speed wobble. It's an incredible ride. If you've not tried drop through, you need to give it a go. Some people don't like the look, but on a pintail where you don't stand above the trucks it's a winner every time. Watch out for more drop through boards over the next few years - this is the future of downhill riding.
